New York AG’s Office Faculty: Kathleen McGee

NY AG 150Kathleen McGee is presently the Chief of the Bureau of Internet and Technology (BIT) for the Office of the New York State Attorney General.  BIT is responsible for the enforcement of New York’s privacy, data security and consumer protection laws in the online and technology environment, as well as for enforcement of New York’s data breach notification laws.  The bureau investigates a wide range of issues affecting the tech space, including privacy violations, data security breaches, online safety, native advertising, deception and fraud.

Kathleen’s recent achievements have included groundbreaking investigative work on Internet Service Providers in New York state, violations of the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA), and astroturfing and false endorsements in promotions, as well as successful litigation against Daily Fantasy Sports.  Kathleen’s recent policy work has included developing legislation on data security and the use of software bots in ticket sales, amongst other issues.  And, Kathleen regularly presents on issues of data security, privacy, and consumer protection.

Previously, Kathleen was the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement for the City of New York, where she focused on the policy and civil enforcement of quality of life issues such as illegal hotels and counterfeit trademark activity as well as developing policy and legislative initiatives for the Criminal Justice Coordinator’s Office.  During that time, Kathleen also co-developed the New Business Acceleration Team, a multi-agency initiative that simplified governmental process and procedure for new businesses and streamlined new business openings.  Prior to her work for the Mayor’s Office, Kathleen served for over six years as a prosecutor of sex crimes, child abuse and domestic violence for the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office.  Kathleen was also a co-developer and program coordinator of the Chicago Public Housing Recycling Buy-Back Program, an economic-environmental initiative she started as an AmeriCorps VISTA in the 1990s.  Kathleen is a graduate of Boston University School of Law, the University of Chicago, and Sarah Lawrence College.
