Timothy A. Gallagher was named Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Newark Division in February 2016. In this capacity, he is responsible for the federal law enforcement response for all threats to the State of New Jersey. In leading these threat mitigation efforts, Mr. Gallagher oversees approximately 800 employees at 11 locations and a budget of over $60 million. In September 2016, Mr. Gallagher led the FBI response to bombings in two New Jersey locations, which resulted in the arrest and conviction of a lone wolf terrorist actor.

Prior to this assignment, Mr. Gallagher served as Deputy Assistant Director in the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters.

Throughout his more than 20-year career in the FBI, Mr. Gallagher has served in a variety of operational and leadership positions, including as Special Agent in Charge of Washington Field Office (WFO) Criminal/Cyber Division from 2012 through 2015. During his tenure at WFO, Mr. Gallagher led the FBI’s response to the active shooter incident at the Washington Navy Yard, serving as the On Scene Commander. Additionally, he led the FBI to numerous successful outcomes in cases involving public corruption, cyber intrusion, and complex financial crimes, many of which were international in scope.

From 2011 through 2012, Mr. Gallagher served as chief of the Financial Crimes Section at FBI Headquarters, where he was the national program manager of the White Collar Crime program, which addressed health care fraud, corporate/securities fraud and financial institution/mortgage fraud. Before this, Mr. Gallagher was chief of the Cyber Division’s Strategic Outreach and Initiatives Section in 2010. In this role, he oversaw the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), cyber outreach to private sector partners, as well as the recruitment, training, and placement of Cyber Agents. In addition, Mr. Gallagher ran a Cyber Forensics laboratory with nationwide response capabilities.

From 2008 to 2010, Mr. Gallagher was the assistant special agent in charge of WFO’s Intelligence Division. During his tenure, he was responsible for the integration of intelligence into operations at WFO, served as the Intelligence program manager and provided daily operational oversight of the Analytical and Language Services Branches.

Among his other FBI Headquarters assignments, Mr. Gallagher served as a supervisory special agent in the Financial Crimes Section, where he specialized in combating identity theft and mortgage fraud. In 2004, he coordinated a national mortgage fraud takedown to call attention to the growing threat.

Mr. Gallagher began his career as a Special Agent in May 1996 in the Cleveland Division’s Canton Resident Agency and investigated all criminal programs. He was a member of the Evidence Response Team and responded to the crash site of United Flight 93 in Somerset, Pennsylvania, on September 11, 2001. He later served as the White Collar Crime Supervisor in the Kansas City Field Office.

Mr. Gallagher was born and raised in New York. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from St. Peter’s University in New Jersey, and the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Walsh University in Ohio. Before joining the FBI, Mr. Gallagher spent five years investigating allegations of fraud and corruption in technology transfer programs at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Department of Defense.
